What is a neck lift?
A neck lift (platysmaplasty or lower rhytidectomy) tightens loose neck skin and the thin neck muscle underneath, and can remove fat under the chin. It softens a “turkey neck”, vertical neck bands and a blurred jawline.
It is often done together with a facelift, because the neck and lower face age together - but a neck lift can also be done on its own through small cuts under the chin and behind the ears.

Who is a neck lift for?

If your skin is still firm and the problem is mainly fat, neck liposuction alone may be enough. If the jowls and cheeks have dropped too, a combined face and neck lift usually gives a more balanced result.
Types of neck lift
Platysmaplasty tightens the neck muscle through a small cut under the chin - it treats neck bands. Cervicoplasty removes and re-drapes excess skin through cuts behind the ears. Most neck lifts combine the two, sometimes with liposuction under the chin. A mini neck lift uses shorter cuts for milder laxity.
How the surgery is done
Under general anaesthesia (or local anaesthesia with sedation), the surgeon makes incisions under the chin and/or around the ears, tightens the platysma muscle, removes excess fat and trims the skin. The scars sit in natural creases and usually fade well. The operation takes about 2–3 hours, and most people stay one night in hospital.
Recovery
Expect swelling, bruising and a tight feeling in the neck for the first two weeks. You wear a compression garment, sleep with your head raised and avoid turning your head sharply or bending forward. Most people go back to desk work after 10–14 days and to exercise after 4–6 weeks. The final shape shows after about 3 months.

- Bruising, swelling and temporary numbness of the neck skin
- A collection of blood under the skin (haematoma) that may need draining
- Infection or slow wound healing - higher in smokers
- Visible or thickened scars
- Rarely, injury to a nerve that moves the lower lip - usually temporary
- Asymmetry or loose skin returning over time
How long do results last?
A surgical neck lift usually lasts 10 years or more. The skin keeps ageing, but the neck generally stays firmer than it would have without surgery. Keeping a stable weight and protecting your skin from the sun help results last.
Non-surgical alternatives
For milder changes, thread lifts, HIFU and anti-wrinkle injections for neck bands can help for months to a couple of years. They cannot remove loose skin the way surgery does.

Is a neck lift painful?
You are asleep or sedated during surgery. Afterwards most people describe tightness and soreness rather than sharp pain, managed with ordinary painkillers for a few days.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey?

Will the scars show?
The incisions are placed under the chin and around or behind the ears. They are red at first and usually fade to fine lines within a year; hair can cover the ones behind the ears.
