&Gastric Sleeve Surgery in Turkey — A Guide for New Zealanders

Why So Many New Zealanders Are Choosing Turkey

The New Zealand public health system performs fewer than 600 bariatric surgeries per year for a population where obesity affects nearly 1 in 3 adults. The waiting list is years long — and even then, not everyone qualifies.

Private surgery in New Zealand costs between $18,000 and $25,000 NZD. For most whānau, that's simply out of reach.

Turkey has become the answer for thousands of New Zealanders , not because it's a shortcut, but because it offers accredited hospitals, experienced bariatric surgeons, and all-inclusive packages at a fraction of the cost. The flight is long (~22 hours from Auckland), but the outcome can be life-changing.

At &New Me, we're a marketplace, which means you compare real certified providers, read verified patient reviews, and choose the surgeon and clinic that's right for you. We don't push one clinic. We help you find the best fit.

Can I Use My KiwiSaver to Pay for Surgery in Turkey?

This is the most common question we get from New Zealand patients — and the honest answer is: yes, many people do, but the process requires preparation.

KiwiSaver early withdrawal for bariatric surgery is processed under two possible grounds:

          1. Serious illness — Your GP must certify that your weight or obesity-related health conditions pose a serious and imminent risk, significantly shortening your life expectancy. This is a high bar, but it has been approved for bariatric surgery by multiple providers.

          2. Financial hardship — If the cost of surgery would cause you significant financial hardship and you have no other reasonable way to fund it, most providers will consider this. You'll need to demonstrate you've explored other funding options (a decline letter from a lender helps significantly).

          What you'll need:

          • A letter from your GP supporting the medical necessity
          • Documentation of your health conditions (diabetes, sleep apnoea, joint disease, etc.)
          • Evidence that you've explored other funding options
          • A quote from the surgical provider

Which providers have approved bariatric surgery withdrawals? Milford, Booster, Simplicity, AMP, ANZ, and Fisher Funds have all processed approvals — though each case is assessed individually.

Important: Approval is not guaranteed and rules vary by provider. The bar is shifting and some providers are adding more hurdles. We recommend working with your GP early, being thorough with your documentation, and applying under financial hardship if you don't clearly meet serious illness criteria.

Is It Safe? What NZ Patients Need to Know

This is a fair question, and we won't avoid it.

There have been cases of New Zealanders experiencing complications after surgery abroad, including in Turkey. Most complications arise from choosing unaccredited clinics, skipping pre-operative assessments, or inadequate follow-up care after returning home.

Here's how & New Me is different:

We only work with accredited providers. Every clinic and surgeon on our platform holds international accreditation — including JCI (Joint Commission International), TEMOS, or certification from the Turkish Ministry of Health.

We require pre-operative assessments. Before any surgery is confirmed, your provider will review your medical history, current medications, and health status. If you're not a suitable candidate, a responsible surgeon will tell you.

We stay with you after you're home. Our team is available after your return to New Zealand. If something concerns you, contact us, and we will coordinate directly with your surgeon.

We have real patient reviews, not just testimonials.  Read what actual New Zealand patients experienced, including the parts that weren't perfect.

The risk of doing nothing is real as well. Obesity-related diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and joint degeneration are serious conditions. Many of our patients tell us they wish they'd done this sooner.

Real Stories from New Zealand Patients

[Insert your existing NZ patient reviews here — especially Māori/Pacific patients by name if they've consented]

Thousands of New Zealanders have had bariatric surgery in Turkey. There's even a Facebook community — "I left my stomach in Turkey" — with over 7,000 members sharing their journeys, supporting each other, and answering questions from people considering the surgery.

The Practical Side: Getting to Istanbul from New Zealand

Flight time: Auckland to Istanbul is approximately 21–23 hours (usually 1 stopover, often Dubai or Singapore).

How long do you need to stay? Most gastric sleeve patients stay 5–7 days in total — 2–3 nights in hospital, then 2–3 nights recovering in your hotel before flying home. We recommend not booking return flights earlier than Day 6.

Best time to go: Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable seasons in Istanbul.

Your whānau: Many patients bring a family member or close friend. Some packages include accommodation for a companion. Let us know when you enquire, and we'll check what's available.

What Happens After You Return to New Zealand?

This is where overseas surgery requires planning. Your NZ GP will be your primary point of contact for follow-up. We recommend:

          • Booking a GP appointment for 2 weeks after your return
          • Getting a full blood panel at 3 months (B12, iron, zinc, folate, Vitamin D)
          • Registering with a dietitian experienced in bariatric patients — ask us for referrals

Your Turkish surgeon will provide a full discharge summary and follow-up protocol in English. We help coordinate communication between your Turkish provider and your NZ GP if needed.

          Frequently Asked Questions

How much does gastric sleeve cost in Turkey for NZ patients? All-inclusive packages typically range from $5,000–$7,500 NZD, covering surgery, hospital stay, pre-op tests, and post-op care. This compares to $18,000–$25,000 NZD for private surgery in New Zealand.

Can I use KiwiSaver for gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey? Yes — many New Zealanders have successfully withdrawn KiwiSaver funds for bariatric surgery under financial hardship or serious illness grounds. You'll need GP support and documentation. See our full KiwiSaver guide.

Is gastric sleeve surgery in Turkey safe? Yes, when performed at accredited facilities by experienced bariatric surgeons. &NewMe only works with internationally certified providers. Complications do occur in a small percentage of cases, as with any surgery worldwide.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey? Plan for 5–7 days minimum. Most patients spend 2–3 nights in hospital and 2–3 nights in a hotel before flying home.

Will my NZ GP support me after surgery? Most GPs will. Bring your discharge summary and follow-up protocol. We can help facilitate communication between your Turkish surgeon and your GP if needed.

I'm on the public waiting list — should I still consider going to Turkey? That's your decision. NZ public waiting lists are typically 3+ years, and not everyone who's referred will ultimately qualify. Many patients on the waiting list choose to proceed privately in Turkey rather than wait.

&NewMe is a certified medical tourism marketplace. We connect New Zealanders with accredited bariatric surgeons and clinics in Turkey. We are not a medical provider and do not provide medical advice. Always consult your GP before making any surgical decision.
