          Your Post-Surgery Recovery Guidelines

After undergoing plastic surgery, proper post-operative care is crucial for a successful recovery and optimal results. The period immediately following surgery requires careful attention to wound care, pain management, and physical activity. Understanding and following these guidelines not only enhances healing but also minimizes complications.

This comprehensive approach ensures that you can resume normal activities confidently, knowing you've taken the necessary steps to support your body's healing process.

          Wound Care

          • Keep the wound clean and dry after surgery.
          • Remove the dressing on the first or second day and cover the wounds with adhesive bandages.
          • Do not remove the paper strips or cut any visible sutures.
          • If applicable, reapply the ace wrap for 5-7 days to reduce swelling.
          • Keep the wounds dry for 48 hours. You can expose them in the shower from the 5th day onwards, but avoid scrubbing.
          • Avoid bathing or swimming until sutures are removed.

          Icing

          • Use ice continuously while the post-op dressing is on.
          • Once the dressing is off, apply ice for 20 minutes, 3-4 times a day.
          • Be cautious to prevent frostbite.

          Mobility

          • Follow the weight-bearing instructions given at discharge.
          • You may need crutches or a cane for walking support.
          • Elevate the operated limb for the first 72 hours to reduce swelling.

          Post-Surgery

          • Anesthesia can cause nausea for the first 24 hours.
          • If nauseous, drink clear liquids like Sprite or 7-Up and eat dry crackers or toast.
          • Severe nausea or signs of dehydration require contacting your doctor.
          • A slight fever (100.5°F) within the first 24 hours is common; call your doctor for any temperature over 101.0°F.
          • If you experience a spinal headache from a spinal anesthetic, contact the surgery center.
          • Take 81 mg of baby aspirin daily until sutures are removed to lower blood clot risk.
          • Contact your doctor for severe pain or significant swelling in the affected limb.

          Pain Medication

          • Local anesthetics are applied to the incision after surgery.
          • Expect increased pain on the first or second day due to swelling.
          • Take pain medication before bedtime to aid sleep.
          • Avoid alcohol and driving while on narcotic medication.
          • If prescribed narcotics, supplement with 200 mg or 400 mg of ibuprofen every 4-6 hours.
          • Resume normal medications for other conditions the day after surgery.

          Activities

          • You can usually drive once you stop taking narcotic pain medication unless it involves your right leg.
          • Avoid driving under the influence of narcotics.
          • Returning to school or work depends on your pain level; use it as a guide.

          Follow-Up

          • Schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor 7-10 days after surgery.
          • For emergencies or concerns, contact the cartilage center's administrative assistant or the physician on call through our answering service after hours.
