What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction removes breast tissue, fat and skin to make the breasts smaller, lighter and higher - it always lifts the breast too. Many people choose it for back, neck or shoulder pain. Results vary, and your surgeon will tell you what is realistic for you.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a breast reduction cost in Turkey?
Listed breast reduction packages on &NewMe currently range from €2,750 to €8,130, depending on the surgeon, hospital and nights in hospital. You get a written quote within 24 hours, before you book. Breast reduction cost guide
Is a breast reduction also a breast lift?
Yes. The nipple is moved higher and the breast is reshaped, so a reduction lifts the breast as well. Packages called "reduction + lift" describe the same operation.
Can I breastfeed after a breast reduction?
Possibly, but not always. Some people breastfeed fully, some partly and some not at all. Tell your surgeon if you plan a pregnancy.
How long should I stay in Istanbul?
Usually 1 night in hospital, then a hotel until your surgeon's check - ask how many days they want you to stay before you book flights (often around a week).
Will I have scars?
Yes - around the areola and usually a vertical line, often with a scar in the crease under the breast. They fade over 12-18 months but do not disappear.
Breast reduction: what to expect
Short answers to the questions we hear most. Your surgeon will advise on your own case.
What is breast reduction?
Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) removes breast tissue, fat and skin to make the breasts smaller and lighter. The nipple and areola are moved higher at the same time, so every reduction is also a lift. People usually ask for it because of back, neck or shoulder pain, bra straps digging in, rashes under the breast or difficulty exercising - or simply to feel more in proportion.

Breast reduction and lift: one operation
Some surgeons quote "breast reduction + lift" and others just "breast reduction" - in practice it is the same operation: tissue is removed and the breast is reshaped and lifted. If you mainly want a higher, firmer shape and are happy with your size, a breast lift alone may suit you better. If you want more upper fullness, ask about a lift with implants.
What scars will I have?
Scars depend on how much tissue is removed:
- Around the areola + vertical ("lollipop") - for moderate reductions.
- Around the areola + vertical + in the crease ("anchor" or inverted-T) - for larger reductions; the most common pattern.
Scars are red or darker for the first months and usually fade over 12-18 months, but they do not disappear. Scars can heal thicker in some people. Your surgeon tells you which pattern they plan after seeing your photos.

What does recovery look like?
- Operation: usually 2 to 3 hours under general anaesthesia.
- Hospital: usually 1 night (some surgeons 2).
- Work: many people take 2 to 3 weeks off.
- Exercise and lifting: avoid stretching, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for up to 6 weeks.
- Support bra: many surgeons ask for a soft sports bra day and night, for up to 3 months.
- Driving: not until wearing a seatbelt is no longer painful - often a few weeks.
- Final shape: swelling settles over several months.

When can I fly home?
Most surgeons want to see you for a check before you fly home - ask how many days they want you in Istanbul (often around a week) before you book flights. Long flights soon after surgery raise the risk of blood clots: walk regularly, drink water, and ask your surgeon about compression stockings and whether you need anything else for the journey. Plan who can help you lift luggage.
Breastfeeding and nipple sensation
A reduction can affect the milk ducts and nerves. Some people can breastfeed afterwards, some can only partly, and some cannot - there is no way to know in advance. Nipple sensation can be reduced or, less often, increased; it often improves over months but can be permanent. If you plan to have children, tell your surgeon - some people choose to wait, as pregnancy and breastfeeding change the breasts again.

What are the risks?
Like any operation: bleeding, infection, reactions to the anaesthetic and blood clots. Specific to breast reduction: wound-healing problems (often where the scars meet under the breast), visible or thick scars, uneven breasts or nipples, changes in nipple sensation and, rarely, loss of blood supply to the nipple. Smoking and a high BMI increase the risk of healing problems. Your surgeon should go through these with you.

If something isn't right after you're home
- Your coordinator stays with you through recovery - message them first with photos if something worries you.
- Remote follow-up with your surgeon is part of the process after you return home.
- Complication insurance is included by most providers - check your quote for what it covers.
For a fever, a hot, red or rapidly swelling breast, heavy bleeding, chest pain or breathlessness, get medical help at home straight away, then tell your coordinator.
How do I choose a breast reduction surgeon?
- A specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, registered on HealthTürkiye (the Ministry of Health portal) and operating in a hospital authorised for international patients.
- Before-and-after photos of patients with a similar starting point.
- A written quote naming the surgeon, hospital, nights, what is included and the revision policy.
