This is the most common question we get from New Zealand patients — and the honest answer is: yes, many people do, but the process requires preparation.

KiwiSaver early withdrawal for bariatric surgery is processed under two possible grounds:

1. Serious illness — Your GP must certify that your weight or obesity-related health conditions pose a serious and imminent risk, significantly shortening your life expectancy. This is a high bar, but it has been approved for bariatric surgery by multiple providers.

2. Financial hardship — If the cost of surgery would cause you significant financial hardship and you have no other reasonable way to fund it, most providers will consider this. You'll need to demonstrate you've explored other funding options (a decline letter from a lender helps significantly).

What you'll need:

• A letter from your GP supporting the medical necessity
• Documentation of your health conditions (diabetes, sleep apnoea, joint disease, etc.)
• Evidence that you've explored other funding options
• A quote from the surgical provider

Which providers have approved bariatric surgery withdrawals? Milford, Booster, Simplicity, AMP, ANZ, and Fisher Funds have all processed approvals — though each case is assessed individually.

Important: Approval is not guaranteed and rules vary by provider. The bar is shifting and some providers are adding more hurdles. We recommend working with your GP early, being thorough with your documentation, and applying under financial hardship if you don't clearly meet serious illness criteria.
