Gastric sleeve in Turkey vs New Zealand (2026): cost, safety and total budget

The honest comparison

A gastric sleeve in a New Zealand private hospital costs about NZ$19,150–24,000 on surgeons’ published price lists. Surgeon and hospital packages offered by providers on &NewMe in Istanbul cost about NZ$3,260–5,500 (€1,630–€2,750).

Flights, time away and the follow-up you need at home narrow the gap - and Health NZ does not recommend weight loss surgery overseas. This page puts the real numbers and the safety facts side by side, with sources, so you can decide with your GP and your whānau.

How to compare the two options

A simple order that works for most New Zealanders.

  1. Talk to your GP first - about surgery, and about follow-up care at home
  2. Get a written NZ quote and a written Turkey quote, and list what each one includes
  3. Add flights, insurance, extra nights and time off work to the Turkey quote
  4. Check how you would pay: savings, KiwiSaver early release or finance
  5. Plan your first weeks after surgery - who you call, and where your blood tests happen

Safety: what Health NZ and ACC say

This is the part to read twice.

  • Health NZ does not recommend it. Health NZ says having weight loss surgery overseas is not recommended because of the risk of complications and the need for ongoing support after the operation (Health NZ: Bariatric (weight loss) surgery, updated July 2026).
  • No ACC support for complications. Health NZ says that if you have complications from weight loss surgery done overseas, you will not be eligible for ACC support. ACC’s own rules only allow cover for an overseas treatment injury in narrow cases (ACC OIA response GOV-029160) - plan as if you will not be covered.
  • The public system still treats you in an emergency - but NZ surgeons say patients with complications after overseas surgery are adding to pressure on public hospitals (RNZ), and costs usually cannot be recovered from the overseas clinic.
  • When to fly home is your surgeon’s call. Complications most often show up in the first weeks, and Health NZ has cautioned about long-haul flights soon after surgery (RNZ / NZ Herald, 7 November 2025). On &NewMe packages you fly home only once your surgeon has checked you and confirmed you are fit to fly, with blood-clot prevention for the journey. If your surgeon advises a longer stay, plan a few extra nights in Istanbul.
  • Insurance. Basic travel insurance rarely covers medical tourism; you pay for treatment and for anything that goes wrong (SafeTravel: Medical tourism). Look for cover that includes complications and medical evacuation, and tell the insurer about the surgery.

Having surgery at home also has risks - every operation does - but in New Zealand your surgeon, your follow-up and ACC treatment injury cover are all in one place.

If you choose Turkey: how &NewMe reduces the risk

&NewMe is a marketplace: you compare surgeons and get written quotes from providers listed on &NewMe before you decide. For every gastric sleeve provider, &NewMe checks that:

  • the hospital is licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Health and authorised for international patients
  • complication insurance is in place - included by most providers, as Turkish law requires for international surgical patients (check your quote for what it covers; an initial exclusion period may apply)
  • you get the price and refund rules in writing before you pay
  • the surgeon who operates on you is named in your quote

Your surgeon reviews your medical history before anything is confirmed, and will say no if surgery is not safe for you. Your coordinator stays with you on WhatsApp before, during and after the trip, and &NewMe helps your GP and your surgeon talk if needed. Your surgeon gives you a discharge summary and follow-up plan in English. On packages that include dietitian support, a bariatric dietitian guides you from liquids to normal food.

Paying with KiwiSaver? Read the KiwiSaver early release guide first - approval is not guaranteed, so check the provider’s refund rules before you pay a deposit.

After surgery, wherever you have it

A gastric sleeve is for life. Health NZ says you need a multivitamin every day for life and blood tests at least once a year with your healthcare provider. If you have surgery in Turkey, tell your GP before you go and book a GP visit for when you are back - your GP stays your main doctor at home. Frequently asked questions

Is it safe for a New Zealand or Australian patient?

Surgery always has risk, and having it far from home adds some: complications usually appear in the first few weeks, often after you have flown home, and Health NZ does not recommend weight loss surgery overseas. The risk is lowest with an experienced bariatric surgeon in a licensed hospital, proper pre-op checks, a plan for the flight, and follow-up arranged at home. &NewMe checks the hospital licence, the named surgeon, written price and refund rules and complication insurance before you book. Australians face the same questions - check what your health fund covers at home before you go.

Does ACC or KiwiSaver cover complications?

No. Health NZ says you will not be eligible for ACC support for complications from weight loss surgery done overseas. KiwiSaver early release, if approved, can pay for the surgery itself - it is not insurance. Complication insurance is included by most providers on &NewMe (check your quote for what it covers), and you should add travel insurance that covers medical tourism. Public hospitals still treat emergencies.

How much does it cost in total?

In Turkey, surgeon and hospital packages on &NewMe cost about NZ$3,260–5,500; with return flights (about NZ$2,400–3,600) the total is about NZ$5,660–9,100 plus travel insurance and any extra nights. In New Zealand, private surgery costs about NZ$19,150–24,000, or up to about NZ$27,500 where consultations and extras are charged separately. Prices from 2026-10-02.

How long should I stay in Istanbul after surgery?

Most packages include about 3 nights in hospital, then you fly home once your surgeon has checked you and confirmed you are fit to fly, with advice on blood-clot prevention for the long flight. Health NZ has cautioned about long-haul flying soon after surgery, so if your surgeon recommends staying longer, budget for a few extra hotel nights.

Will my GP look after me when I get home?

Your GP stays your main doctor. Tell your GP before you go, bring your English discharge summary, and book a visit for when you are back. You need a daily multivitamin and blood tests at least once a year for life, wherever you have the surgery.

Why is a gastric sleeve so much cheaper in Turkey?

Mostly lower hospital, staff and running costs, and a high volume of bariatric surgery in big Istanbul hospitals. The operation is the same - what differs is what is included, how follow-up works and what happens if something goes wrong, so compare written quotes, not headline prices.
