Breast Lift with Implants in Turkey

What it is

A breast lift with implants, sometimes called augmentation-mastopexy, does two jobs in one plan: it lifts a breast that has dropped, and it adds volume. The lift removes excess skin, tightens tissue and moves the nipple higher. The implant fills the upper part of the breast and increases overall size.

The two operations work against each other in a surgical sense: a lift tightens the skin envelope, while an implant stretches it. That is why this is a more technical operation than either one alone, and why choosing the surgeon matters more than the label on the package. If you only need a lift, see breast lift. Who it is for

It is often considered after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, when the breast has lost both volume and shape: the nipple points down, the upper breast looks empty and the skin is loose. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes that a lift alone does not add fullness at the top of the breast; adding an implant is the usual way to do that.

Not everyone with a droopy breast needs an implant, and not everyone who wants an implant needs a lift. A surgeon should examine you, measure how far the nipple sits below the crease under the breast, assess your skin and tissue, and tell you whether you need a lift, an implant, both, or neither.

Surgery may need to wait, or not be right, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, planning a pregnancy soon, still changing weight, or a smoker unwilling to stop around the operation. Smoking in particular raises the risk of wound-healing problems, which a combined operation already makes more likely.

One operation or two

Many surgeons do the lift and the implant at the same time. Some prefer two stages: a lift first, then an implant months later, or the reverse. Two stages cost more and need a second trip, but can give the surgeon more control when the breast is very droopy, the implant is large or the skin is poor.

Ask directly: "Would you do this in one operation or two for me, and why?" The answer tells you a lot about how the surgeon reasons. If your plan includes two stages, price it and plan your travel for both.

The choices you will make

Implant type, shape, size, placement and brand all apply, as for augmentation. In a combined operation, surgeons often advise a more modest implant size than patients first ask for, because a very large implant puts the tissue and scars under strain. Bring photos of results you like and dislike, and ask which scar pattern the surgeon plans (around the areola, vertical, or anchor-shaped) and why.

What the trip looks like

Most people spend one night in hospital; check the nights each surgeon includes on the surgeons page and in your quote. Operating time depends on the plan, and the combined operation usually takes longer than either alone.

Plan on about a week in Istanbul so the surgeon can check wounds and dressings before you fly. BAAPS advises waiting around five to seven days before flying after breast surgery and confirming timing with your surgeon, because surgery plus flying raises clot risk. On the flight home, walk when you can, drink water and ask whether to wear compression stockings.

Packages usually include surgery, anaesthesia, the operating theatre and the surgeon's fee, with one hospital night. Hotel, transfers, support bras, extra nights, flights and sometimes the implants are separate, so ask that the implant brand, type and size be named in your written quote. Recovery timeline

These are typical guides; your surgeon's instructions come first.

• First days: Swelling, bruising and tightness. Wear the support bra day and night.
• About two weeks: Many people return to desk work. Do not drive until you can brace and turn without pain.
• About six weeks: Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting until your surgeon clears you.
• Months: The implants settle into position and the breasts take their final shape over a few months. Scars fade gradually.

Risks and things to ask about

You carry the general risks of surgery (bleeding, infection, reaction to anaesthetic, clots) plus the risks of both procedures. From the lift: wound-healing problems, thicker or more visible scars, uneven breasts or nipples, and changes in nipple and breast sensation. From the implant: hardening from scar tissue around it (capsular contracture), rupture (which can be silent), folds, rippling and rotation. BIA-ALCL, a rare cancer of the immune system, has been linked mostly to textured implants; ask which surface yours has.

Revision rates are higher than for either operation alone. Ask your surgeon how often their patients need one, what the package says about revisions and what a revision would cost.

Implants are not lifetime devices. The NHS says they will probably need replacing at some point, and some people need further surgery after about ten years. Keep your implant details with your medical papers. Seek urgent help for fever, a hot, red or rapidly swelling breast, heavy bleeding, chest pain or breathlessness.

Why it costs less in Turkey

In the UK, this combined operation is rarely available on the NHS and is almost always paid for privately. Turkish packages are often lower because staff, facilities and cover cost less and exchange rates help visitors. That does not make the operation safer or riskier by itself: compare the surgeon's experience with combined operations, the hospital, whether implants and a possible second stage are priced in, and the aftercare plan. Choosing a surgeon

Because this is a technically demanding operation, ask how many combined lifts and implants the surgeon does, to see healed before-and-after photos of patients like you, and who handles problems after you leave. Look for a registered plastic surgeon (specialty and licence checkable on HealthTürkiye, the Ministry of Health portal) operating in a hospital you can name.

Notes for patients travelling from different countries

From the UK. Flights take around four hours. BAAPS cautions that aftercare abroad can be limited once you are home and that most holiday insurance does not cover surgery that goes wrong. Ask who reviews problems remotely, how revisions and complications are handled, and whether you will receive operation notes and implant details for your GP.

From New Zealand and Australia. Expect roughly a day of travel with a stop. Long flights raise clot risk after surgery, so allow extra days in Istanbul, ask your surgeon what they advise, and agree how you will send photos across time zones. A two-stage plan is harder from far away, so raise it early.

From Germany and elsewhere in Europe. Direct flights from major German cities take around three to four hours. Ask for operation notes and implant details in English so your own doctor can read them.

From Kenya, Morocco and other African countries. There are direct flights to Istanbul from several cities, but routes and visa rules vary by passport. Check entry requirements before booking and plan a full week in Istanbul.

Tell your coordinator which country you live in so the plan covers your flight, aftercare and insurance as well as the operation.

Aftercare when you are home

• What scans or check-ups do you advise for my implants in the years ahead?

Bring photographs of your breasts before pregnancy or weight change, if you have them, and tell the surgeon about medication, past surgery and smoking.
