Dental quotes, explained

The short answer

Two dental quotes for "the same" treatment often describe different treatments. One may include the CT scan, extractions, temporary teeth and the hotel for your second visit; another may leave them out, or use a cheaper implant or crown material. The Oral Health Foundation warns that the advertised price may not cover everything you need. Before you compare prices, make sure you are comparing the same plan.

What is often left out of a quote

These items can change the total a lot. Check whether each one is included, priced separately, or missing:

  • CT scan - a 3D scan of the bone; implants should be planned from one, not from photos alone
  • Extractions - teeth that have to come out first, often priced per tooth
  • Bone graft - needed when there is too little bone; it also adds healing time
  • Sinus lift - adds bone under the sinus in the upper back jaw
  • Abutment type - the connector between implant and crown; ask that it is original to the implant system, not a cheaper compatible part
  • Temporary teeth - removable or fixed, for the months between visits
  • Sedation - if you would rather not be fully awake
  • Second-visit hotel and transfers - packages sometimes cover the first trip only

Gum treatment (a deep clean) or root canals can also appear once you are examined. Each should have a clinical reason - root canals are for infection or damage, never to make cosmetic work easier on healthy teeth.

Per-tooth vs package pricing

Per-tooth (or per-implant) pricing shows the unit price of each item. It is easy to compare, but the total depends on how many units your plan needs - ten crowns at a low unit price can still cost more than you expect.

Package pricing is one price for a defined result, such as All-on-4 per jaw or a smile makeover. It is simpler, but check what is inside: how many implants or crowns, which materials, temporaries, both visits and the hotel nights.

To compare a per-tooth quote with a package, turn both into one number: the total for your whole plan, both visits included. See typical dental implant prices.

Why a very cheap crown price can be a lead-in

A very low price for a zirconia crown may be real, but it is often the headline, not the bill. If the same quote then adds implants, extractions or grafts at higher unit prices - or these appear only once you arrive - the total is no longer cheap. A low per-crown price can also make a plan with more crowns than you need look affordable. Healthy teeth should not be cut down for crowns for cosmetic reasons; crowns vs veneers explains why.

How to compare like-for-like

Ask each clinic for a written plan based on your X-rays or CT scan, tooth by tooth, then put the quotes side by side:

CompareWhat to check in each quote
Implant brandBrand and model named? Premium, mid-range or budget? Abutment from the same system?
Crown materialZirconia, e.max, porcelain-fused-to-metal or acrylic - for every tooth?
GuaranteeHow many years, for which parts (implant, crown, work)? In writing? Who pays travel for repairs?
VisitsHow many, how many days each, and what is included on visit 2?
ExtrasCT scan, extractions, graft, sinus lift, temporaries, sedation: included, priced, or missing?
TotalOne figure for the whole plan, both visits.

If one quote is much cheaper, find the line that explains it. Use our questions to ask your dental clinic for everything else.

Signs a quote is not the full price

Any one of these is a reason to ask before you book.

No CT scan or X-ray behind the plan
Without one, grafts, sinus lifts and extractions cannot be known yet.
A per-tooth price with no total
Ask for one figure for your whole plan.
No implant or abutment brand named
Or a "premium implant" with no brand, model or implant passport.
"Extras may apply" with no prices
Ask for the price of each possible extra in writing now.
Only the first visit described
Check appointments, hotel and transfers for visit 2 as well.
Guarantee mentioned but not written
Ask what it covers, for how long, and who pays travel for repairs.

How quotes work on &NewMe

A written plan you can compare

Clinics on &NewMe typically write your plan from a recent panoramic X-ray or CT scan and photos: every tooth, the treatment for it, the material, the unit price and what is included on each visit. If a graft or sinus lift might be needed, ask for its price up front. If a scan in the clinic changes the plan, ask your clinic to confirm the updated plan and price in writing before treatment starts - see how to avoid surprises.

How to avoid surprises

You stay in control of your plan and your price. Three simple steps:

  1. Before you travel

Send your panoramic X-ray or CT scan from home and get a written plan and an itemised quote before you book flights to Turkey.

  2. If the clinic's scan changes the plan

A scan in the clinic, such as a 3D CT scan, can show bone a panoramic X-ray cannot - for example a need for a bone graft or sinus lift. Ask your clinic to confirm the updated plan and price in writing.

  3. Agree it before treatment starts

Nothing should be done until you have agreed the plan and price. Keep a copy of each version, and use our questions to ask your dental clinic.

Frequently asked questions

Why is one dental quote so much cheaper than another?

Usually because it covers less, or uses a cheaper implant, abutment or crown material. Check the CT scan, extractions, grafts, temporary teeth, sedation, the guarantee and the second visit - then compare the total for the whole plan.

Is the CT scan included in a dental implant quote?

Sometimes. Some clinics include it, others charge for it or plan from a panoramic X-ray first and scan on arrival. Ask - implants should be planned from a 3D scan of the bone.

Are hotel and transfers included for the second visit?

Not always - some packages cover the first trip only. Ask what is included on each visit, in writing, before you book.

Can you check a quote I got from another clinic?

Yes. Send us the main points - treatments, number of implants or crowns, brands, materials, total - and we will tell you what to ask and compare it with written quotes from clinics on &NewMe. Free, no obligation.

Already have a dental quote?

Send us the main points. We'll compare it like-for-like with written quotes from clinics on &NewMe that name the dentist and the clinic.
