The checklist: 12 questions

Tick each one off when the answer is in writing.

  1. Is my plan based on X-rays or a CT scan?

A plan made from photos alone is an estimate. Ask for the X-rays (and a CT scan for implants) the plan is based on, and keep copies.

  2. Which teeth get which treatment, and why?

Ask for a tooth-by-tooth plan: implant, crown, veneer, filling or extraction - and the reason for each one.

  3. Are any root canals planned? On which teeth, and why?

Root canal treatment is for infection or damage inside a tooth. A healthy tooth should not be root-treated for cosmetic reasons - if the plan includes one, ask why.

  4. Which implant brand, and will I get an implant passport?

Ask for the brand and model in writing, and the implant card or passport with the barcode stickers, so any dentist can identify the parts later.

  5. Is the abutment original - from the same maker as the implant?

The abutment is the connector between the implant and the crown. Ask for its brand on the quote too.

  6. What are the crowns or veneers made of?

Zirconia, e.max (glass-ceramic), porcelain or composite look, wear and cost differently. The material should be named on the quote.

  7. Will I have temporary teeth, and are they included?

Ask whether temporary teeth are fixed or removable, how long you wear them, and whether they cost extra.

  8. What exactly is included in visit 2?

Appointments, the final teeth, and - if the package includes them - hotel nights and transfers for the second trip as well as the first.

  9. Is the guarantee in writing?

What it covers (implant, crown, veneer, the work itself), for how long, and any conditions such as check-ups. Only the written wording counts.

  10. What happens if something fails when I'm home?

Who you contact, whether a local dentist can see you first, and who pays for corrective work and travel.

  11. What is the total cost, including extras?

Grafts, sinus lift, extractions, root canals, temporary teeth, sedation and scans - with the unit price of every item.

  12. Who will treat me?

The name of the dentist who will place the implants or prepare the teeth, and their registration.

Why these questions matter

In this guide
  1. A plan you can check
  2. Healthy teeth and root canals
  3. Implant brand, passport and abutment
  4. Two visits, two sets of costs

A plan you can check

The Oral Health Foundation advises getting a clear treatment plan and a full breakdown of costs before you have dental treatment abroad. A good plan is based on your X-rays (and a CT scan for implants), lists every tooth and what will be done to it, and gives the unit price of each item. Clinics on &NewMe typically ask for a recent panoramic X-ray and photos before they write a plan; your clinic will confirm the final plan in writing after examining you.

Implant brand, passport and abutment

An implant has parts: the screw in the bone, the abutment that connects it, and the crown on top. Ask for the brand of the implant and the abutment in writing, and for your implant card or passport with the product stickers. If you ever need a repair, any dentist can then identify the parts. Clinics on &NewMe typically give an implant passport - ask for yours before you fly home.

Two visits, two sets of costs

Implant treatment usually means two trips a few months apart. Check what the package covers on the second trip as well as the first - appointments, hotel nights, transfers - and who pays for travel if work has to be corrected. Guarantee length and conditions: your clinic will confirm them in writing.

Red flags in a dental quote

Any one of these is a reason to ask more questions before you book.

A full plan without any X-rays
Photos alone cannot show the roots, the bone or hidden decay.
Crowns on every tooth, whatever its condition
Healthy teeth usually suit veneers, bonding or whitening.
Root canals with no reason given
Each one should have a clinical reason, such as infection or damage.
No implant brand named
Or "premium implant" with no brand, model or passport.
A low per-tooth price with no total
Extras such as grafts, extractions and temporary teeth can change the total a lot.
Pressure to decide before you have the written plan
You should have time to read it, and to ask a dentist at home.
