Board Takes Action After Brazilian Butt Lift Deaths
Death rates from BBLs have increased, despite changes from the Florida Medical Board that allows better control and discipline of doctors when a patient dies or is seriously injured, and a new state law.
South Florida has become the plastic surgery capital, thanks to women coming from all over the country to become the popular procedure like the BBL.
But as NBC 6 Investigators has reported for years, at least 19 women have died after cosmetic surgery in this region over the past five years.
No Fat Will Be Injected Into The Muscle
Miami-based board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. “In 2019, due to all deaths, the Florida Board of Medicine made a rule stating that doctors can no longer inject muscle fat,” said Pat Pazmiño.
“In 2021, eight women in South Florida died of fat embolism after Brazilian butt lift surgery,” Pazmiño said. “This is because this procedure is still very popular and there has been a lot of suppressed demand after the pandemic.”
Reacting to the disturbing trend, the Florida Medical Board has issued an emergency order limiting BBL surgeries to three per surgeon per day to prevent this situation.
The Deceased Woman Was The Seventh Patient Of The Day
Last summer, Dr. It is believed that the doctor's fatigue may have contributed to the death of a 33-year-old woman who died after having the BBL procedure performed by John Sampson.
Reviews say the doctor started the surgery at 6:32 am that day, he was the seventh patient of the day, and his surgery started at 8:31 pm.
"Every surgeon who has done the full range of Brazilian butt lifts knows it's a very challenging procedure, both mentally and physically," Pazmiño says. said.
Dr. Sampson did not appear before the board at Friday's hearing, and his case was moved to the next meeting.
In a letter sent to the board, her lawyer Monica Felder wrote that she "...examined the circumstances that may have affected her performance that day" and that she "will no longer plan to start proceedings after 6 pm".
In another case, the board, Dr. He put a one-year probation on Sergio Alvarez's medical license, which limited his ability to perform BBLs except as an observer.
Alvarez was the doctor who administered BBL to Danea Plasencia in 2019. The young mother died of fat embolism after the procedure.
The state argued that Danea had made a medical malpractice by injecting fat into her gluteal muscle, something the medical community knew at the time that it could cause pulmonary embolisms.
When asked about the board's decision, his attorney Sean M. Ellsworth told NBC 6: “Dr. Alvarez is a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Successfully performed over 6,000 BBLs. It was the only mistake in his entire career.” Ellsworth said he would appeal the board's decision.
In the emergency decree, which was approved Friday and expires in 90 days, the board also required surgeons to use ultrasound technology to avoid injecting fat into the muscle when applying BBL.
